We held our first exhibition for our Young at ‘Art programme; which takes place at the Carmelita Centre in Vauxhall on Thursdays. Our Young at ‘Art classes are for adults potentially at risk of isolation and loneliness as it is a safe space for adults to come and share time with like-minded people; often making new friendships! We also support adults with special and complex needs to take part in the sessions ensuring the sessions are inclusive for all adults. After coming second in Resident Project of the Year for Lambeth in September 2017 we thought it was a great opportunity to showcase the work. You can see pictures of the private view and artworks here & here – as well a short film about the programme here.

30th September 2017
Cool it Art and VGERTA’s project providing free Art classes for Adults “Young at Art” was shortlisted alongside 5 other projects by Lambeth Council for Resident Project of the Year. During the Resident Assembly on the 30th September held at Lambeth College, South Side. Projects were invited to present their project to the audience so that Lambeth Tenants and Residents could vote for their favourite project.
The projects shortlisted were fantastic; from community gardens to business hubs, social games evenings to art projects, it was great to hear about the inspiring work being done across the borough by TRAs and organisations working together to enhance their estates through projects.
1st place was awarded to Roupell Park for their volunteer led Social Games evening to get neighbours talking to one another and feel less isolated – their win was very well deserved! Young at ‘Art was awarded second place which Cool it Art and VGERTA were thrilled about! 3rd place was awarded to a community garden project on Caldwell Gardens Estate.
Young at ‘Art was very well received by the audience for it’s inclusiveness of all ages and the fact it is a mixed ability group; welcoming adults with complex needs to take part without feeling judged. We hope Young at ‘Art will continue to go from strength to strength – and that more members of the community come and join in the creativity.

To celebrate we held a pop up workshop in store about “Me, Myself and I” a celebration of our Heritage, Culture and who we are!
Here is what Tesco had to say about the event:
Customers visiting the Tesco store in Kennington were treated to a special art workshop this weekend, in association with local Community Arts Group, Cool it Art.
The event was part of Tesco’s ongoing support for the organisation which provides free artistic opportunities for children. Weekly classes are currently taking place in Lambeth focusing on creating art projects using household junk.
Tesco store Manager, Kerry Harrison presented the Cool It Art owner Amanda Callis with a donation of £500 to go towards the cost of the classes.
The store on Kennington Lane are also providing the group with free fruit each week, to enable children to enjoy a healthy snack when attending the classes.
Project leader, Amanda Callis said; “I would like to thank Tesco for their on- going support for the project which enables local children to enjoy free art classes.
“The art workshop in-store today has also helped to spread the word about the classes in the area whilst enabling children to have a taster session.”

The whole thought behind it was food sustainability and food waste which is why we also created our favourite leftover recipes to be put together in an online book – watch this space! You can hear interviews about the event here and read WPS’s blog about the event here.

Children created stories assisted by the Storytellers which the children then illustrated collaboratively. Volunteers from City & Guilds of London Art School and The Challenge illustrated the events of the day on a large scale mural in the foyer and children had the opportunity to take part in a competition which GreatArt and Walker Books generously provided prizes for. Over 417 children plus their families took part over the 5 days – we enjoyed every moment!

Over the Summer we worked on a mural at the South Mitcham Community Centre with a group of 6-10 year olds to create an 8 x 3 metre long mural inspired by this year’s Big Draw theme “Every Drawing tells a Story”. Using this as a base we partnered with Walker Books, GreatArt and Amicus Horizon to create a mural based on children’s favourite stories of old and new. The launch of the finished mural including the centre’s refurbished second floor including dance studio took place on the 2nd October at 6pm with members of the local community coming to celebrate the children’s work and the centre – we had such a fun time! A massive thank you to Amicus Horizon for funding it, GreatArt for match funding our art materials and Walker Books for not just providing reference books – which we then donated to the nursery house in the centre; but books for each of the children who took part to take home!

So we successfully reached our goal with the kickstarter! Reaching 113% of our goal which will enable us to fund another year of art classes. Because we hit 100% with a few days to go we set some additional goals such as paying for 3 parents to get a qualification in Education and Training and putting on a 5 day event at Vauxhall City Farm for the Big Draw in the October half term. Our former funders Lambeth Living now Lambeth Council kindly offered to cover the cost of the parents on our behalf meaning we had about half of our target for the 5 day event! You can read all about it on the kickstarter page here. We also have a youtube channel with videos about the progress which you can watch here. Thank you all for your support – mainly so we can continue to work with kids like these!
