We were so excited to take part in the Wandsworth fringe in partnership with Work and Play Scrapstore supported by Smallwood School and Be Enriched, we came up with an event to create a large scale, recyclable, aerial mural about seasonal food; from the farm to the table. The whole thought behind it was food sustainability and food waste which is why we also created our favourite leftover recipes to be put together in an online book – watch this space! You can hear interviews about the event here and read WPS’s blog about the event here.

So the It’s Our World Charity Art Auction finally came around after months of hard work from all involved! We were so excited to have been able to contribute to helping the event come together with the rest of the Management Committee and being given the opportunity to recreate images from the online gallery made by the children and young adults that took part on amazing paper lanterns, donated by iPower Cordless Lighting, to adorn the entrance to the auction. The auction went really well and managed to raise over £100,000 for the Big Draw & Jupiter Artland

We have had so much fun over the past 5 days running a Big Draw event at Vauxhall City Farm. The event was a combination between Art and Storytelling: Storytellers; Bronia Evers from One Moment in Time Theatre & Sonia Hinda-Lea Caller of Stories from the Magic Tree narrated stories whilst Amanda Callis from Cool it Art illustrated them in real time. Children created stories assisted by the Storytellers which the children then illustrated collaboratively. Volunteers from City & Guilds of London Art School and The Challenge illustrated the events of the day on a large scale mural in the foyer and children had the opportunity to take part in a competition which GreatArt and Walker Books generously provided prizes for. Over 417 children plus their families took part over the 5 days – we enjoyed every moment!

Over the Summer we worked on a mural at the South Mitcham Community Centre with a group of 6-10 year olds to create an 8 x 3 metre long mural inspired by this year’s Big Draw theme “Every Drawing tells a Story”. Using this as a base we partnered with Walker Books, GreatArt and Amicus Horizon to create a mural based on children’s favourite stories of old and new. The launch of the finished mural including the centre’s refurbished second floor including dance studio took place on the 2nd October at 6pm with members of the local community coming to celebrate the children’s work and the centre – we had such a fun time! A massive thank you to Amicus Horizon for funding it, GreatArt for match funding our art materials and Walker Books for not just providing reference books – which we then donated to the nursery house in the centre; but books for each of the children who took part to take home!

So we successfully reached our goal with the kickstarter! Reaching 113% of our goal which will enable us to fund another year of art classes. Because we hit 100% with a few days to go we set some additional goals such as paying for 3 parents to get a qualification in Education and Training and putting on a 5 day event at Vauxhall City Farm for the Big Draw in the October half term. Our former funders Lambeth Living now Lambeth Council kindly offered to cover the cost of the parents on our behalf meaning we had about half of our target for the 5 day event! You can read all about it on the kickstarter page here.  We also have a youtube channel with videos about the progress which you can watch here. Thank you all for your support – mainly so we can continue to work with kids like these!

Cool it Art is pleased announce our involvement in the Lord Mayors’ Show 2013 which was held on November 9th this year. Cool it Art worked with the Worshipful Company of Tax Advisers to create a float for the Lord Mayor Fiona Woolf’s theme of Green Energies. We came up with the theme of “Green Taxes make the world go round”, the WCoTA participants forming the “Green Team” complete with their green fairtrade hoodies, recycled placards and the large sculpture adorning the float created from recycled carrier bags to form an Owl (WCoTA’s logo) perching on top of the world. Whilst creating such a large sculpture was not the easiest project we have ever taken on it was immensely enjoyable, there are some photos below you can click on to enlarge and more photos can be found on photographer Phil Mcarthy’s Website.
